It’s happening, what day is it? It’s Sci-Friday! Welcome back to another edition of Sci-Friday. I have been thinking of what I was going to write about all week and just before I sat down to write this, it dawned on me, why not write about some of the most influential female characters in all of Sci-Fi.
Before we get to the badass ladies of Sci-Fi I am going to give a shoutout to a few of the other writers who have participated in the past, I can’t guarantee that they will participate every week but here they are,
If you haven’t checked out any of these great writers, you should go ahead and do so right now.
Now for my Top 5 Ladies of Sci-Fi, let’s go!
Leeloo - The Fifth Element (1997)
Leeloo, played by the multi-talented Mila Jovovich, is a mysterious and otherworldly being who is the Fifth Element. She is the last piece of a cosmic weapon capable of defeating the ultimate evil threatening Earth.
She is reconstituted from her remaining genetic material, her appearance is striking with her bright orange hair and distinctive otherworldly beauty.
She is capable of incredible physical abilities, including superhuman strength and agility, as well as impressive combat skills. She has no prior knowledge of Earth or its customs, which leads to several hilarious moments as she tries to navigate the human world. Leeloo is the ultimate intergalactic badass, if you haven’t seen her in The Fifth Element check her out.
Dana Scully - The X-Files
Played by Gillian Anderson, Scully is as beautiful as she is logical. She is a no-nonsense, rational, and scientifically-minded individual who approaches her work with a strong commitment to finding scientific explanations for the bizarre and unexplained occurrences she and Mulder encounter.
Dana Scully is the antithesis of the far-out conspiracy-chasing Fox Mulder and his open-minded and often paranormal beliefs. This dynamic between Scully's skepticism and Mulder's belief in the supernatural forms a central aspect of the show's narrative tension, without Scully Mulder would have been lost in a world of paranoid conspiracies a long time ago. It’s time to go down the rabbit hole once again.
Sarah Connor - Terminator
Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton is a kind-hearted and somewhat naive individual, working as a waitress, going about her everyday life. This is until her life takes a drastic turn when she becomes the target of the Terminator, a cyborg assassin sent back in time to eliminate her because she will one day give birth to John Connor, the leader of the human resistance against the machines.
Sarah’s transformation from a meek and mild waitress to a certified ass-kicker is one of the most amazing character turnarounds in cinematic Sci-Fi history, and as it turns out, she’s not crazy after all.
Ellen Ripley - Alien (1979)
Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver becomes the sole survivor of the Nostromo's crew after they encounter a deadly alien creature, later known as the Xenomorph. Her resourcefulness and courage enable her to survive the terrifying ordeal.
Her determination, intelligence, and willingness to confront dangerous situations to protect herself and others are the essence of Ripley’s character. Ellen Ripley is one of the most iconic and influential female characters in Sci-Fi, she is just as badass as Sarah Connor but in space!
Barbarella (1968)
Barbarella is a sexy space adventurer played by the iconic and timeless Jane Fonda in this 1968 adaptation of a French comic book character of the same name. She is sent by the Earth's president to retrieve Durand Durand from the Tau Ceti planetary system. Barbarella is a galactic heroine who is known for her free-spirited and uninhibited personality.
She kicks ass all over the galaxy and looks good doing it. Barbarella explored themes of sexual freedom and gender roles long before it was the thing to do. The character has had a lasting influence on pop culture and remains a symbol of female empowerment and exploration to this day.
Leeloo, Ripley and Sarah Connor are my top 3 sci-fi baddies! Great list!
Great list with some deeper cuts!
