It's Time Again for Sci-Friday!
This week I am making recommendations to myself for the Top 5 Sci-Fi films that I need to watch!
The end of the traditional work week is upon us once again, which can only mean one thing. It’s time for Sci-Friday!
Time is a funny thing, for me, it is something that’s elusive and passes by far too quickly. This lack of time that most of us more than likely experience means that there is very little time at all for keeping up with any kind of entertainment, including Sci-Fi.
This is why today, I will be recommending to myself, 5 Sci-Fi films that I have intended to sit down and watch but haven’t prioritized the time to do so yet.
Before we get into the various forms of entertainment I need to watch, please allow me to take the time to acknowledge some of the other regular participants of Sci-Friday.
If you haven’t already checked out these fine authors, I ask you kindly to go and do so now.Now let’s get to the pieces of Sci-Fi that I should have seen long ago but embarrassingly did not, here we go!
Interstellar (2014)
I know this is probably going to come as a shock to many of you but no, I have never seen this film. I have been planning to see it since 2018 when the film was but a young four-year-old piece of Sci-Fi.
As life would have it I have never prioritized the time to sit my ass down and watch it. I know that I would thoroughly enjoy it. With a dystopian future, black holes, and time dilation what Sci-Fi fan wouldn’t love it? Having not seen this movie is just sad.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
In the last four years or so I have been contemplating all of the usual existential questions in life such as, who are we as a species, why are we here, are we in a simulated multiverse and so on. To me, it would only seem natural that I would have seen a movie like Cloud Atlas but No, I haven’t.
For some reason, this is another epic piece of Sci-Fi that I have neglected to give myself the gift of. Why! One reason may be that a good friend of mine told me that Cloud Atlas was the worst three hours of his life, no, that’s not it. I never am swayed by reviews for good or bad.
I have even told myself that I could break it up into 3 parts and watch it like a show or it could be broken into 6 parts but I just can’t do it. Maybe it will forever be on my “watch” list. Dreams and Deja Vu, that is right up my alley, I should set aside some precious time and get it done, my future self who actually watches the film will be me now, who will be me then, or…whatever.
Brazil (1985)
As a fan of Terry Gilliam, having watched him in Monty Python and enjoying the crazy adventure of his film Tideland, it has however been until recently that I had heard of Brazil. Granted it did come out in 1985 when I was two years old but that’s no excuse, I should have seen it by now.
Brazil looks like just the kind of weird chaos that I often gravitate toward, pure madness in motion cut with dry British humor is something I can get behind. After all Robert DeNiro has a role in this film, and he is one of the greatest actors of our time, it looks like pure gold to me.
Moon (2009)
I gotta admit, I don’t know if I could last three weeks on the moon all by myself let alone three years, that task seems like it would leave even the strongest minds in a weakened state.
Moon is one of those films, much like Cloud Atlas, that my wife watched without me at some point in time while I was at work. I have missed out on a ton of great films as you can probably see by now. It doesn’t help that I don’t seem to recall much of the year that Moon was released.
This seems like one that I could only watch once anyway, it looks crazy-making. I love a good brain twister but the characters’ experience alone on the moon seems borderline torturous.
Blade Runner (1982)
I have loved Harrison Ford since I was a kid thanks to Indiana Jones, and I have been a fan of Ridley Scott for most of if not all of my adult life but somehow Blade Runner has escaped me.
Like other films on this list, this one seems like I would have jumped all over it as soon as I could, but no, I didn’t. Now as I sit here watching the trailer I am reminding myself once again to go ahead and take the plunge and dive right in.
Who knows, maybe I will check Blade Runner out sooner than later. Our society is right now, dealing with the infancy of artificial intelligence and replicated humans, maybe this film is more relevant than I think it is.
Moon is the most depressing, tragic movie I have ever seen and easily one of the greatest sci-fi stories ever told. Great article!
You'll love Interstellar. Go see it right away.
I haven't seen Cloud Atlas either, though!
