Here we are again, this week’s Sci-Friday is the second to the last Sci-Friday of 2023!
This week I am giving you my Top 5 Sci-Fi shows geared toward kids, but the beauty of Sci-Fi is that you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy these shows.
Before we get into what kids’ Sci-Fi shows I like to watch let’s take a long moment to give a shout-out to a few of the other Sci-Friday participants past, present, and future.
Here they are,
@Cole NobleIf you haven’t checked out any of these fantastic authors you should stop everything you’re doing right now and go check them out!
Now for my Top 5 Sci-Fi shows for kids, let’s go!
Steven Universe
Steven is a hybrid, part-human, and part-Gem, inheriting his powers from his mother, Rose Quartz, who gave up her physical form to give birth to him. Steven lives in the fictional town of Beach City, where he is raised by the Crystal Gems, a group of magical beings—Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl—who are guardians of Earth.
The series gradually reveals that the Crystal Gems are fugitives from a great interstellar empire. During their missions, they visit ruins that were once important to Gem culture but have been derelict for millennia.
The Gems are cut off from the Gem homeworld, and Steven learns that many of the monsters and artifacts they encounter are Gems who were corrupted by a Gem weapon of mass destruction and can no longer maintain rational, humanoid form.
If you have kids you may have seen this show but if you haven’t it’s worth checking out.
Dexter’s Laboratory
Dexter’s Laboratory is an old-school show that I thoroughly enjoy until this day.
Dexter has a secret laboratory hidden behind a bookshelf in his suburban home, where he conducts a variety of scientific experiments and invents incredible gadgets, Dexter is a crazy kid genius.
Dexter's attempts to keep his lab a secret are often thwarted by his annoying older sister, Dee Dee, who frequently barges into his lab, triggering chaotic and unpredictable consequences that cause a host of problems that she could never understand.
Dexter's Laboratory is known for its clever humor, inventive storytelling, and exploration of the clash between science and the chaos of childhood, making it a beloved and iconic animated series.
Gravity Falls
Dipper and Mabel Pines, are sent to spend their vacation with their great-uncle Stan in the quirky town of Gravity Falls, Oregon.
Soon after their arrival, the twins discover that Gravity Falls is not your average town; it's filled with supernatural mysteries, bizarre creatures, and a hint of the paranormal. The twins stumble upon a mysterious journal that becomes their guide to unraveling the town's secrets.
Throughout their adventures, Dipper and Mabel encounter a cast of eccentric characters, including Grunkle Stan, the owner of the Mystery Shack, a tourist trap with peculiar exhibits. The enigmatic Bill Cipher, a powerful and malevolent triangular entity, becomes a central antagonist as the twins uncover the secrets behind the strange happenings in Gravity Falls.
Invader Zim
If you know then you know as soon as you hear the theme song, it’s Invader Zim!
The show centers around an overconfident but inept extraterrestrial invader named Zim, who is part of the Irken race, an alien species with a strong desire to conquer the universe.
Zim is given a second chance at glory after a previous disastrous mission, and he is sent to Earth with the delusional belief that he will conquer the planet. To aid him in his mission, Zim is accompanied by his malfunctioning and unpredictable robot servant GIR.
Upon arriving on Earth, Zim enrolls in a local school to blend in with the human population, much to the disbelief and annoyance of his classmates, particularly Dib, a young paranormal investigator who is the only one aware of Zim's true identity.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
This show first aired when I was ten years old, I remember watching it before catching the bus to go to school. I recall it being one of the best parts of my day.
A group of ordinary teenagers is chosen to become the Power Rangers, a team of color-coded warriors with unique abilities and giant robotic dinosaurs called Zords. The teens include Jason (Red Ranger), Kimberly (Pink Ranger), Zack (Black Ranger), Trini (Yellow Ranger), and Billy (Blue Ranger), led by their mentor Zordon and his wise-cracking robotic assistant Alpha 5.
The Rangers' main mission is to defend the fictional city of Angel Grove from the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and her minions, who aim to conquer the world. Each Ranger possesses martial arts skills and, with the help of their high-tech Power Morphers, can morph into powerful armored warriors. When the threat escalates, they summon their individual Zords, which can combine to form the mighty Megazord to battle gigantic monsters created by Rita.
This show may be more child-like than the other show I have listed here but I have to confess that I still enjoy it and so does my nine-year-old. It’s Morphin time!
Dexter's Lab was a childhood favorite of mine too. Love this list!
Thanks man! I was just thinking about Toy Story the other day, I may just run with that idea for next weeks Sci-Friday, the last one of the year. Crazy.
