Sci-Friday is Upon Us Once Again!
This week we are going to check out my top 5 Sci-Fi Comedies
Welcome back to Sci-Fridays! One day a week we all come together to celebrate the spirit of Sci-Fi, and that day is today! This week I will be taking you on a tour of my top 5 Sci-Fi comedies. I think these films are hilarious, maybe you will too. Enjoy!
Let’s go!
Paul (2011)
The story follows two British comic book enthusiasts and best friends, Graeme Willy (played by Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (played by Nick Frost), who embark on a Sci-Fi pilgrimage to the United States.
Their goal is to attend the one and only San Diego Comic-Con and then take an RV tour of the extraterrestrial highway. Exploring UFO and alien-related locations across the American Southwest.
During their journey, they encounter an unexpected companion: Paul, an extraterrestrial being who has escaped from a secretive government facility. Paul is a shit-talking, ass-slapping, easygoing alien. He’s kind of like an alien version of “The Dude”, if you can abide by that.
He asks for Graeme and Clive's help to evade government agents who are pursuing him and to reach a specific location where he can arrange for his escape back to his home planet.
Along the way, Graeme and Clive learn more about Paul's experiences on Earth and the challenges of being a stranger in a strange land.
Free Guy (2021)
This is a great Sci-Fi action comedy that I wouldn’t have known about if it weren’t for my recently eighteen-year-old nephew. Thank you for showing this to me.
This film is set in a fictional open-world video game called "Free City". It follows the story of Guy, played by Ryan Reynolds, who is a non-player character (NPC) in the game. NPCs in Free City are programmed to follow a repetitive and predictable routine, unaware that they exist in a virtual world.
This was all fine and dandy until Guy became self-aware but in a different way than Skynet. Guy decides to break free from his pre-programmed limitations.
He decides to take control of his own destiny, embarking on a journey to become a hero and win the heart of Molotov Girl, a player character. Along the way, he discovers the truth about the game's creator and becomes entangled in a battle to save Free City from being shut down.
Evolution (2001)
This is another great one by Ivan Reitman, it stars David Duchovny and follows the story of a group of scientists who discover evidence of extraterrestrial life on Earth.
Dr. Ira Kane and his colleague, Harry Block, are biology professors at a community college in Arizona. One day, they investigate a meteor crash in the desert and discover that it contains alien organisms. This is when the government gets involved.
When the rapidly evolving extraterrestrial lifeforms soon become a major threat to the entire planet. They must come up with a plan to stop the aliens and save humanity.
If you haven’t heard of this one check it out, it’s goofy but I like it.
Galaxy Quest (1999)
In my opinion, Galaxy Quest is as classic as the TV shows that it parodies. The film revolves around the cast of a canceled, cult TV show called "Galaxy Quest," which was once hugely popular in the 1980s.
The former stars of the show have since struggled to find meaningful work and are mostly relegated to making appearances and signing autographs at sci-fi conventions.
Their lives take an unexpected turn when a group of real extraterrestrials known as Thermians arrives on Earth. These Thermians have intercepted the old "Galaxy Quest" broadcasts and believe the show to be historical documents rather than fictional entertainment. They come to Earth seeking the help of the show's crew to save their civilization from a deadly threat posed by an evil warlord.
Initially, the actors believe they are attending yet another fan convention, but they soon discover the Thermians' plea for help is legit.
This hilarious parody pokes fun at every single sci-fi show that’s ever been made, I love it!
Land of the Lost (2009)
This film is a comedic adaptation of the 1974 television series of the same name.
Dr. Rick Marshall (played by Will Ferrell) is a washed-up scientist who becomes a laughingstock in the scientific community due to his theories about time warps and alternate dimensions. However, his colleagues are ultimately proved wrong when he builds a machine called the "tachyon amplifier," which unexpectedly opens a portal to another world.
Transported to an alternate dimension Dr. Marshall and his team are forced to navigate this alien world full of prehistoric creatures and bizarre landscapes.
As the team navigates this mysterious land, they encounter a variety of strange creatures, including the intelligent but obnoxious primate-like creatures known as Sleestaks and a tyrannosaurus rex.
Will they ever make it back to their own world, or will they be stuck in the Land of the Lost forever?
I had forgotten how amazing Galaxy Quest is! Really, really fun.
I think the others have fallen through my radar over the years. Good list.
will definitely check out Free Guy and Land of the Lost. The others are firm favourites of mine :D especially Galaxy Quest!!
